THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS...

The teachings of Jesus have impacted the world like those of no other figure in the history of mankind.

His teaching was powerful and compelling.

Jesus' apostle and former tax-collector Matthew wrote that "He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes", Matthew 7:29.  Whilst the scribes were very familiar with the ancient scrolls handed down to them through generations, and could recite large sections of Scripture without hesitation, it was Jesus who taught with "authority" and conviction and it was Jesus who drew huge crowds wherever He went.

So popular was Jesus with the common people that His enemies became extremely jealous of Him and sought opportunity to kill Him.  This ultimately lead to his betrayal by one of His own disciples, Judas Iscariot, for thirty pieces of silver.

His teaching was uncompromising.

Jesus saw his role as being "about His Father's business", not in pandering to the whims of religious devotees or in presenting a message which would be pleasing to His listeners.

His teaching was prophetic.

Many prophets have come and gone, and many claiming to be prophets.  Yet the teachings of Jesus have never been contradicted by time.

His Early Teachings on the Mountain

Often referred to as "The Beatitudes", ...........

The Parables of Jesus

Jesus often spoke in parables – simple stories that contained a deeper message for those prepared to think more deeply about what he had said.

To some, these teachings were like riddles they could not understand, yet there was always a message for those who truly wanted to understand.

His Blunt Teachings About Hypocrisy

One of Jesus "pet hates" was the hyprocrisy or insincerity of the religious leaders of His day.  His strongest messages were for those who claimed to be the people of God, yet were not living as they should. He likened them to white-washed tombs full of dead men's bones (Matthew 23:27).

His Prophetic Messages – Speaking of the Future

Much of Jesus' teaching was about future events – prophetic utterances about the physical destruction of the city by the Roman army in AD70 and about His Second Coming "at the end of the age", when he promised to take his own to be with him (John 14:3).
